Ding (bell ringing)
John had a hotel-reception-style orange bell from the very beginning of the show that he rang when Merlin made a stealthy joke that was worth acknowledging. Later on Merlin also got a bell (or even several) and rang the bell when he wanted to transition to a sponsor-read or when the show was over.
John's original bell came from the board game Pit and can be seen further down on this page (RL41)
